What is Integrated Organization Design?

Integrated Organization Design™ is both a philosophy and a method. It is the practice of designing an organization cohesively across all functions and building a unique organizational structure that aligns all of the organization’s resources to consistently produce experiences across all stakeholder groups that are congruent with the organization’s purpose, identity, and strategy.

The organization itself must be designed

To operate with integrity and provide value to customers at scale, design the organization as a system that includes the experiences of all immediate stakeholders.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Treat the entire organization–people, resources, processes, experiences–as a single system that serves its intended purpose. No silos.

Trust is paramount for a thriving organization

For an organization to serve its purpose and produce its best work, trust must be established and maintained between immediate stakeholders.

Work backwards from the customers needs

With a firm grasp of the value the organization creates for its customers, the system can be designed to fulfill customer needs, bringing together all people and resources within the organization to do so.

Resilience outperforms rigidity

To be resilient, embed the flexibility to adapt to new context without breaking or straying from purpose, value experimentation and continuous improvement, and reject unnecessary complexity.

Extreme clarity makes for smooth operations

Every person, resource, and process has an unambiguous job for executing the organization’s strategy. People work to maintain balance within the system because they understand it.

Solve challenges holistically to solve them completely

Track but do not react to symptoms. Trace symptoms throughout the entire organization to underlying causes and solve problems at (or as close to) the root as possible.

Metrics are useful but they aren’t everything

Metrics can be useful, but they are also incomplete stories. Dig deeper to find meaning and separate signal from noise.
